  • Maryland's Second Largest City Selects InfoSWMM and InfoWater

Frederick, Md., looks to GIS-based technologies to support its water, sewer and storm water systems
    June 26, 2009

MWH Soft, a global provider of environmental and water resources applications software, has announced that the city of Frederick, Md., has chosen InfoSWMM and InfoWater software as its advanced sewer and water modeling and design solutions.

The decision leverages the utility’s investment in ArcGIS technology from ESRI, Redlands, Calif., by giving it the most technologically advanced GIS-centric software platform available for managing, operating and sustaining its drinking water and wastewater systems.

Built atop ArcGIS with native geodatabase support, InfoWater and InfoSWMM offer a single comprehensive, GIS-centric solution for analyzing and managing the most complex water distribution and sewer collections systems. A seamlessly integrated geospatial framework applies GIS intelligence to engineering-accurate information, coupled with the most advanced numerical computation, genetic algorithm optimization and object-component geospatial technologies in the marketplace. The resulting centralized, multi-function system enables world-record performance, scalability, reliability, functionality and flexibility within the powerful ArcGIS environment, completely eliminating the inefficient, unreliable data synchronization, synching schemes or middlelink interfaces required by other software. These factors and more translate to increased productivity, reduced costs, greater efficiency and improved designs, giving water and wastewater utilities a clear competitive advantage.

The city’s Water and Sewer Department operates and maintains public water and wastewater systems. The water distribution system consists of 211 miles of water lines with six water storage tanks with a capacity of 6.75 million gal. The collection system is comprised of nine lift stations, 160 miles of sewer mains and 210 miles of storm water lines.

“GIS has become a central decision making platform for the city of Frederick,” says GIS Manager Matt Bowman. “The InfoSWMM and InfoWater packages leverage our GIS investment better than any other tool out there. They integrate seamlessly with our GIS, giving us the most efficient tool set possible to tackle short- and long-term planning issues. Their powerful features allow us to evaluate hydraulic capacity, water quality issues, pumping efficiency and firefighting capabilities faster than ever before. We are better positioned to make informed decisions that are fiscally sound and maintain a high level of service to our customers.”
