A year after the July 26th deluge, Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh announced that Mumbai will update its storm water drains.
The city’s drainage system is about 100-years-old. Last year the city broke the world record of rain in 24 hours, causing floods and destruction.
According to The Hindu, the Centre has agreed to give approval to Brihan Mumbai Storm Water Drainage Project (BRIMSTOWAD) as a separate project from the Metro railway project. This ensures that BRIMSTOWAD will receive more funding from the Centre and will reduce the burden on the state.
Work on the drainage system has been ongoing, but lack of funds has slowed the process. The project should take about three years and will be carried out in three phases.
