Environmental group Ecojustice recently released the findings of its Flushing Out the Truth report, which tracks the amount of sewage dumped into Ontario, Canada, lakes and rivers by provincial municipalities in 2006 and 2007. Using Ministry of Environment data, Ecojustice found that about 18 billion liters of untreated sewage polluted area water bodies in 2006, followed by an additional 15 billion liters dumped in 2007.
"It's just not interesting or sexy to invest in sewers, and that's part of the problem," Elaine MacDonald, senior scientist at Ecojustice and author of the report, told The Canadian Press. "But we really need to be doing this."
Sewage bypasses and combined sewer overflows have been identified as major factors in Ontario's sewage dumping problem.
