The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) released three new standards that update guidelines for storm water impoundments, as well as updated guidance for urban storm water systems.
“Standard Guidelines for the Design, Installation, and Operation and Maintenance of Stormwater Impoundments, Standards ANSI/ASCE/EWRI 62-16, 63-16, and 64-16,” is the most up-to-date reference on the impoundment and naturally occurring treatment of storm water. Gathered into a single volume, these new standards focus on local and regional impoundments that manage, treat and attenuate storm water runoff, reducing the impact of storm water on downstream areas.
ANSI/ASCE/EWRI 62-16 covers topics like types of systems, regulations and permits, design requirements, safety, inflow hydrology, hydraulic design, routing, and water quality. ANSI/ASCE/EWRI 63-16 discusses subjects like contract documents, site investigation, installation and inspection. ANSI/ASCE/EWRI 64-16 focuses on operation and maintenance of storm water impoundments, including O&M plans, water quality, periodic inspection and maintenance.
“Standard Guidelines for the Design, Installation, and Operation and Maintenance of Urban Stormwater Systems, Standards ANSI/ASCE/EWRI 45-16, 46-16, and 47-16,” a single-volume set of three standards, offers comprehensive guidance for the collection and conveyance of surface storm water. In this new edition, which supersedes the 2005 standards, numerous technical details have been added, drawn from original practical research, particularly in the areas of hydrology, hydraulic design and structural design.
ANSI/ASCE/EWRI 45-16 covers topics on the design of urban storm water systems, like site analysis, system configuration, hydrology and hydraulic design. ANSI/ASCE/EWRI 46-16 addresses installation and discusses subjects like contract documents, preconstruction, construction and inspection. ANSI/ASCE/EWRI 47-16 provides guidelines for the operation and maintenance of these systems.
Airport, road, and other transportation systems engineers, planners and owners considering storm water impoundment solutions will find these new standards to be a valuable resource.
