SWS Webinar Series: As the Tide Turns: Flood Mitigation Solutions to Increase Resilience

In this webinar, which originally aired on Sept. 17, viewers will learn about a combination of complementary infrastructure improvements being advanced to achieve the maximum flood mitigation benefit.

This webinar is now available on-demand.
This webinar will focus on Bow Creek Stormwater Park including site development process.

Like many coastal communities, Virginia Beach, VA, is experiencing more frequent flooding due to sea level rise, increased storm intensity, and aging infrastructure. These challenges, coupled with tidal impacts and low elevations, have resulted in severe flooding in portions of the City. Hurricane Matthew (2016) resulted in the worst structural flooding ever experienced. As a result, the City embarked upon an extensive, multi-year flood mitigation improvement program. The ongoing goal is to increase resilience to future storms and mitigate structural flooding.

In this webinar, which originally aired on Sept. 17, viewers will learn about a combination of complementary infrastructure improvements being advanced to achieve the maximum flood mitigation benefit.

This webinar will focus on Bow Creek Stormwater Park including site development process, interdepartmental collaboration, preliminary engineering analysis, recommendations, challenges, and anticipated phasing.

The session will offer participants unique insight into the solutions to challenges the project faced, including the balance of achieving storage volume while accommodating recreational and ecosystem improvement objectives.
