One of the 2023 Top Projects recognized by Wastewater Digest upgraded an existing wastewater lagoon complex to a treatment facility — but still used its lagoons to store water from heavy seasonal runoff.
The project was honored by Wastewater Digest as one of its 2023 Topic Projects, which recognize remarkable projects in the wastewater sector. This year, the brand recognized the Logan, Utah project for its regional scale and efficient use of its old lagoons. The recognition shows how effective stormwater management can be a significant factor for the success of wastewater treatment plants’ operation.
“The old lagoons are no longer needed, and have been emptied, but they continue to help the facility function,” reads an article on the project by Wastewater Digest. “Instead of designing the new mechanical plant to hydraulically process peak wet weather flows, influent flows over the design capacity of the plant are diverted to the existing lagoons.”
By functioning as storm surge storage, the lagoons were able to save the project $40-60 million in capital costs.
